Events conspired to grant the U17s the first chance of any team to play at the FoD this season and they grabbed the opportunity with both hands. The ground looked a picture.
Losing the toss meant North Leeds took their chance to bat, judging correctly, that the light would get poor later.
KECC bowled really well. Dan began with two straight maidens from the top end. The late arriving Sam made amends for his tardiness with a first ball yorker cannoning into the stumps. Only two batsmen really got in, both top edging Aadam (one off a crafty slower ball). Two tough, steepling catches looking into the low sun were well taken and the innings fizzled out to 100 exactly.
Barring one messy set of 5 overthrows and the odd fumble, the fielding stood up well and there was a great buzz and team spirit. Ewan, Nathan, Suhayb and Seth stopped some tough shots and it helped to strangle the batsmen. Harry was chatty behind the wickets and keeping to Aadam is always lively.
Aadam and Sam got KECC off to a good start in reply before Sam departed. It was starting to get dark and KECC had a serious wobble when James was out and then Aadam (39) was bowled by the most dangerous North Leeds bowler in his last over. Later in that same over Suhayb was unlucky enough to get an absolute jaffer and was out too. KECC were in a bit of trouble.
The light was now seriously dodgy, but KECC had seen off their danger man. Rory, with support from Dan, then flailed an entertaining 31no to see KECC home, finishing it with a 6 onto the pavilion steps (no children or animals were hurt). KECC had 5 overs to spare and it was a good job with the light so poor.
A great start and a good win. A terrific wicket and ground (cheers Hodgy) and thanks go to North Leeds too for a match played against nice lads in a great spirit.
